EntreMed, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENMD), a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company developing therapeutics for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases, announced that it has commenced a multi-center Phase 2 clinical trial with MKC-1 in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. The primary objectives of this study will be to determine the antitumor activity of orally-administered MKC-1 in unresectable or metastatic pancreatic cancer patients who have failed at least one prior chemotherapy regimen. The study will also assess the safety, tolerability and overall median survival time of pancreatic cancer patients treated with MKC-1. Quacks prey on dying

In one case, a young woman with pancreatic cancer died two months after receiving a controversial treatment called "ozone therapy".

Her mother was concerned the treatment had made her condition worse.

The Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner's annual report says all three died without any benefit from the treatments and no refunds were paid to the families.

Commissioner Leena Sudano said authorities were powerless to prevent vulnerable people being exploited.

"We can never stamp this out," she said.

"People can change their names, their shopfronts and . . .

Flat Dysplastic Lesions Identified In Ulcerative Colitis Patients By ...

A pilot study from researchers at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, found that narrow band imaging (NBI) colonoscopy used in cancer surveillance for ulcerative colitis patients can identify flat dysplastic lesions. The research appears in the November issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a novel illumination technology for endoscopy characterized by light with wavelengths of narrow bands that improves the visibility of capillaries, veins and other subtle tissue structures by optimizing the absorbance and scattering characteristics of light. It enhances vasculature within and beneath the mucosa, or lining, of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Random biopsy has been a recommended procedure for cancer surveillance in patients with ulcerative colitis.

Killer ice storm responsible for 25 deaths in central states coming ...

A winter storm watch is in effect from tomorrow morning through the evening, the National Weather service says.

Up to seven inches of freezing rain and snow is expected.

The storm should start sometime in the afternoon, so the mourning commute should be fine.

Meanwhile in Oklahoma and other hard-hit states where the storm caused at least 25 deaths, mainly on the road, hundreds of thousands of people remained without power.

Nearly a half-million homes had no power this morning in Oklahoma. Another 300,000 customers were blacked out in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.

Mismatched' Prostate Cancer Treatment Prevalent

More than a third of men with early prostate cancer who participated in a study analyzing treatment choice received therapies that might not be appropriate, based on pre-existing problems with urinary, bowel or sexual function. The prevalence of these treatment "mismatches" could reflect patient' unwillingness to discuss such problems with their physicians. The study will appear in the January 1, 2008 issue of the journal Cancer and is being released online."Prostate cancer patients experience the same fears and hard decisions as all cancer patients do, but prostate cancer treatment directly affects very personal things that most people aren't comfortable talking about - urinary, bowel and sexual function," says James Talcott, MD, SM, of the Center for Outcomes Research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center, who led the study.

Oprah Winfrey's Devastating Medical Condition

I was watching Oprah the other day and was wondering what was up with my beloved Ms. O. She had been looking so fantastic in the past few years, and suddenly, was no longer emitting that glow I had become accustomed to. Also, she seemed to be putting on weight again, after working so hard to keep her body in shape.

Well, the deal is that Ops has a thyroid condition that is messing with her bod -- big time. In the new issue of O, the talk show queen talks about the months of suffering she endured, before figuring out what was actually wrong with her. "My body was turning on me. First hyperthyroidism, which sped up my metabolism and left me unable to sleep for days. Then hypothyroidism, which slowed down my metabolism and made me want to sleep all the time." The latter contributed to a 20 pound weight gain, and left Oprah feeling completely out of gas.
