| Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy Won't Affect Sexual Function
MONDAY, Oct. 29 (HealthDay News) High-dose precision radiation therapy doesn't harm the sexual function of prostate cancer patients, U.S. researchers say. A team at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia tracked 155 men with intermediate- to high-risk prostate cancer who underwent intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a technique that more precisely targets the tumor. "IMRT is revolutionizing how we treat men with prostate cancer, because it improves our ability to avoid normal tissue. As a result, more radiation dose can be delivered to the prostate by increasing the amount of radiation each day. Increasing the radiation used each day is particularly attractive, because it also shortens the treatment time by several days," study lead author Dr. Mark Buyyounouski, attending physician in the radiology department at Fox Chase, said in a prepared statement.

SEATTLE, Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN) today announced that the Company has completed enrollment of over 500 patients in the Phase 3 IMPACT (IMmunotherapy for Prostate AdenoCarcinoma Treatment, also known as D9902B) clinical trial of PROVENGE (sipuleucel-T), the Company's investigational active cellular immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. The IMPACT study is a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 3 trial designed to measure overall survival in men with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer receiving PROVENGE versus placebo. Earlier this year, following a positive recommendation from an outside panel of experts, Dendreon received a complete response letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that asked for additional evidence that would support the efficacy of PROVENGE.

Immunicon Corporation (NASDAQ-GM:IMMC) announced that it filed with the FDA a request for clearance of the CellSearch Circulating Tumor Cell Kit as an aid in the monitoring of patients with metastatic androgen-independent prostate cancer. Immunicon announced that it had successfully met the primary endpoint associated with its pivotal clinical trial in metastatic androgen-independent prostate cancer in January 2007. The primary endpoint required demonstrating that circulating tumor cells (CTC) levels three-to-five weeks after the initiation of chemotherapy predict overall survival. The study results which were presented by Jose Moreno, MD, clinical associate professor of Urology at Thomas Jefferson University at the 43rd Annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in June also showed that CTC levels predict overall survival at each of the additional monthly time points tested.

BSD Medical Corp. (AMEX:BSM) today announced that the International Journal of Hyperthermia has published the preliminary results of a phase II clinical study involving 144 patients with locally advanced prostate cancer. In this study BSD Medical's BSD-2000 hyperthermia system was used to deliver local hyperthermia combined with conformal radiation therapy and androgen suppression therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer. Hyperthermia combined with radiation and androgen therapy demonstrated results in survival similar to treatments using higher radiation doses, with no significant side effects associated with either hyperthermia or radiation therapy.
